Aquatic Pond Plants

There are hundreds of plants that can grow in water, whether they are immersed with just the roots in the water or submersed 100% underwater. The showiest plants are the water lilies and lotus that seem to rise out of the water on warm, sunny days.

Other plants are considered marginal pond plants, being most comfortable at the side of a pond with the roots in the water. These include certain varieties of lily, rush, sedge, iris, and canna lily. Swamp hibiscus brighten ponds with red and white saucer-size blooms.

Wile some pond plants need to be protected over the winter, most can be sunken in the pond during winter months to keep from freezing.

Lotus seeds will germinate after being stored for 1000 years.

Marshmallows take the name from the swamp rose mallow, a species of hibiscus with soft white material in its roots traditionally used to make sweet treats.
