Bonsai

Intriguing bonsai trees are created to form the illusion of a mature tree in the distance, but in miniature form right in front of you. This Asian tradition of training these living works of art has become very popular in the US.

There are many tree species that can be made into bonsai – some that can remain outdoors all year, and tropicals that spend their winters inside the home. Outdoor evergreen trees include juniper, cedar, pine, and cypress. Other deciduous trees such as Japanese maple and Chinese elm can remain outdoors, taking on a very different look once the leaves fall. The most popular outdoor tree sold at Growing Hobby is the juniper. We offer standard low-growing juniper (Nana) and Shimpaku dwarf juniper. We also have Satsuki azalea.

Tropical bonsai can be enjoyed outside during the summer and brought inside when temps drop below 50 degrees. Many of these are flowering trees, including the desert rose and Fukien tea tree. Others that do well as bonsai are the money tree (pachira), ginseng ficus, jade, and Brazilian rain tree.

Growing Hobby carries the tools, soil, and wire needed to successfully navigate these types of trees. We sell pre-bonsai kits and can provide basic information on bonsai care.
